Q&A: Srijit Chakraborty, Author of 'The Evergreen Emotion'

Srijit Chakraborty is a teen writer, motivator and a sportsman. He hails from Siliguri, a city located at the foothills of Himalayas in the northern part of West Bengal. The natural beauty of his city always inspired him to write, and for him the best way for expressing himself is through writing. He has recently come out with the book The Evergreen Emotion. Through a collection of stories, poems and quotes, the book tries to bring forth strong and untold feelings and emotions, and the distinctive poems in the book narrate a story.

I chat with Srijit about his book The Evergreen Emotion, how the book came to be, book recommendations, and much more.

Hello, Srijit! Tell us a bit about yourself! When did you first discover your love for writing?

I am a student of class tenth at Delhi Public School, Siliguri. My hobbies are writing and listening to music. Apart from this I am also a karate black belt possessor.

Since a very small age I liked writing and was very fascinated with it. I always wrote something or the other whenever I got time. But soon this liking of mine turned into love when I felt the need to express myself and bring social awareness among people about different topics. I believe writing is the best way which can suffice both of these needs of mine.

If you could only describe your book The Evergreen Emotion in five words, what would they be?

Well, that would be – ‘The untold emotions of life.’

Now tell us a little more about the book! What can readers expect?

The book includes poetry, quotes and a few stories. All the writings in this book are based on feelings, emotions and some topics of great social importance. Readers can always expect to find some of their untold feelings and emotions in this book – if not in all the writings, then at least in a few of them.

'The Evergreen Emotion', published by Notion Press

How did the idea of writing this book come about? How long did you take to write it?

To be very honest I actually didn’t have any intention of writing a whole book. I just wrote some poems, stories and quotes which I later combined in the form of a book. I always focus more on writing than its publishing.

All the compositions were written at different times but typing the hand written manuscript, arranging the writings, editing them and modifying them took me around five to six months.

The book is a collection of stories, poems and quotes. What different themes and topics have you discussed in this book?

I have tried to cover many diversified topics in this book, such as love, life, success, sorrow, nature, nation and many more. I have also tried to add some moral based poems and quotes which can help in creating social awareness about different topics.

How have you been coping with the current pandemic and what will be the new normal for you post it?

I believe that the darkest of nights produce the brightest of stars. There is no doubt that this pandemic situation has been and is still very tough but it has taught us many important lessons in our life. The pandemic taught me to enjoy my self-company. It was the best time for me to discover myself. The pandemic also taught me that sometimes being ordinary is the most extraordinary thing one can do. Last but not the least, this situation again proved that living life to the fullest is very necessary. If I say this in my words, then “Live life before life leaves you.”

My new normal would be learning and remembering all the lessons this pandemic taught me and starting this new normal with a positive mindset.

Lastly, are you currently reading anything and do you have any book recommendations for our readers?

Since the last few weeks, daily newspaper and my text books is all that I am reading, because of a slight increase in the pressure of academics. But I do have two good book recommendations for readers. These are The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran and A Boy’s Will by Robert Frost.

The book ‘The Evergreen Emotion’ is available online and at your nearest bookstore.
